Meeting Baron Dunwith Malwind of Vornavis

Our story begins after we have arrived in Vornavis, and have assembled in the High Tower inside the castle keep.

Note: This is a log of the events as they happened, however ... poetic license has been exercised at time along with gratuitous editing. This occured on 3/12 and then 3/19/2000. Ruffelin and Deavon would be Knighted on the return trip to speak with Malwind.

[Vornavis, High Tower]
The city of Vornavis is laid out below, with high, granite walls enclosing the city proper. Beyond the shadow of the north wall are the canvas roofs of the caravansary, while to the east thatched roofs and herds of sheep dot the low hills. To the south, rows of vineyards cover the steeper slopes. The land to the west, between Vornavis' walls and Solhaven Bay, has disappeared - hidden beneath the ramshackle maze of warehouses, brothels, and taverns that is the freeport of Solhaven.
You also see Baronial Advisor Melitor and a trapdoor.

You see Advisor Melitor Seldurion the Elf.
He appears to be in his 100's, has very long silver hair, green eyes, and pale skin.
He is in good shape.
He is holding a mithril sheath in his right hand and an enruned mithril falchion in his left hand.
He is wearing a long black robe, and a skullcap.

Melitor asks, "So are we ready, then?"

Brinn nods to Melitor.

Melitor just went through a trapdoor.

[Vornavis, Tower Landing]
Set into the low ceiling, a trapdoor provides access to the tower's summit. Stairs descending from this landing to the castle below hug the tower's outer wall.
You also see Baronial Advisor Melitor.

Melitor just went down.

[Vornavis, Tower Stairs]
A small landing and a door to the tower room at this level interrupt the sweep of the stairs.
You also see Baronial Advisor Melitor.

Melitor just went down.

[Vornavis, Tower Stairs]
A small landing and a door to the tower room at this level interrupt the sweep of the stairs.
You also see Baronial Advisor Melitor.

Melitor just went down.

[Vornavis, Tower Stairs]
Two doors open off of the landing here. One is ironbound and set into the outer wall of the tower, probably opening onto the castle wall, the other is marked with a plaque and leads to the tower room on this level. The stairs continue above and below the landing, following the curve of the tower wall.
You also see Baronial Advisor Melitor.

Melitor just went through an ironbound door.

[Vornavis, Castle Wall]
This wall protects one of the inner courtyards of the baron's castle. Below the crenellations a paved yard stretches to an outer wall, while to the inside lies a well-manicured garden subdivided by a snowblossom-bordered walkway. A narrow set of stairs descends from the top of the wall to the garden where a small door leads from the garden into the castle.
You also see Melitor and an ironbound door.

Melitor just went down a narrow set of stairs.

[Vornavis, Inner Garden]
Tapered conifers and geometric hedges hide most of the walls surrounding this courtyard, making the garden seem secluded and cozy. Snowblossoms form a constant border to the golden marble walkway that circles the garden and leads from the wall to the garden door.
You also see Baronial Advisor Melitor.

Melitor pants somewhat out of breath.

Melitor says, "Let me see, which way was it from here..."

Melitor just went through the garden door.

[Vornavis, Castle Hallway]
This small, side hallway ends at an arched door with a bronze plaque on it. To the east it joins what must be one of the main hallways of the castle.
You also see Baronial Advisor Melitor.

Melitor just went down a side hallway.

[Vornavis, Castle Hallway]
The polished marble expanse of the hallway runs north and south with the portraits of nameless nobility staring blankly from the walls. A side hallway enters from the west, and set into the east wall is an unmarked door painted the same color as the granite walls.
You also see Baronial Advisor Melitor.

Melitor just went through an unmarked door.

[Vornavis, Side Chamber]
Richly furnished with tapestries and several chairs, this windowless room has only an unmarked door in the west wall and a small door in the east wall for exits. With two doors this is probably a waiting room of some sort rather than a nicely appointed cell.
You also see Melitor and a white-cushioned chair.

The snow-white satin covering the cushion on this chair leaves you wondering if anyone is really supposed to sit on it.

Melitor says, "Now, if you will all please be so kind as to wait here."

Melitor says, "I shall see that the Baron is prepared to receive you."

Melitor just went through a small side door.

Melitor just came through a small side door.

Melitor says, "My lords and ladies, I am sorry to have kept you waiting, my liege was attending to some minor affairs of state. I hope that the delay has not inconvenienced any of you unduly."

Brinn says, "Not at all."

Melitor says, "If everyone could gather themselves, I would present you to my liege. But might I caution one small piece of advice?"

Melitor says, "Please do not bombard the Baron all at once. In affairs of state, to speak out of turn can be considered rude."

Brinn says, "That is the purpose of our herald."

Asglyn bows.

Melitor says, "It would not be a good thing to offend anyone."

Melitor smiles.

Melitor says, "but I am sure that no one would ever do such intentionally."

Melitor sighs.

Melitor says, "Ok, if you are all ready, I shall present you now. If you would follow me."

Melitor just went through a small side door.

[Vornavis, Great Hall]
On a low dais, spanning the southern end of the hall, three regal chairs of state rest before an embroidered tapestry of the Rising Swan of Vornavis that covers the wall behind them. Banners bearing the coats-of-arms of knights in service to the barony hang from the railing of the second floor gallery that lines the other three sides of the Great Hall. Opposite the dais a pair of large, fel doors, inlaid with gold scrolling, are set in the north wall.
You also see Melitor and Lord Dunrith who is seated.

This banner bears the charge of a greatsword proper between thirteen sanguine droplets, and crested with a fan surrounded by gules stars on a field argent.

Asglyn says, "The Order of the Silver Gryphon M'Lord Baron. Again, we are at your service."

Dunrith nods to Asglyn.

Dunrith says, "Sir Cemb, your self-introduction was so concise that I fear I failed to respond. It is good to see you again."

Cemb says, "No problem, M'Lord, I was out of turn I guess anyway"

Cemb grins.

Brinn says, "Baron Malwind, we have brught you a gift. It is something very simple, but what can you give to a man who is a Baron? Please accept this small gift as a token of our respect and gratitude."

Brinn removes a golden gift box from in his gold thread cape.

Brinn offers Dunrith a golden gift box.

Dunrith stands up.

Dunrith accepts Brinn's gift box.

Dunrith bows.

Dunrith opens a small gold gift box.

Dunrith removes a small crystal dragon from in his gift box.

Dunrith smiles.

Dunrith nods to Brinn.

Dunrith says, "Most handsome."

Brinn bows to Dunrith.

Brinn says, "We are honored."

Frorin offers Dunrith a silver gift box.

Dunrith put a small crystal dragon in his gift box.

Dunrith put a golden gift box in his burgundy cloak.

Dunrith accepts Frorin's gift box.

Melitor says, "I will hold onto that for you, my liege."

Melitor bows to Dunrith.

Frorin says, "Tis notin special but wos made wif yeh in mind my leige."

Dunrith says, "I would have handed it to you, good advisor, but I loath having to put it on the floor and watch you snatch it up."

Dunrith opens a silver gift box.

Dunrith removes a black mithril shield engraved with a silver swan from in his gift box.

Dunrith hefts the shield.

Dunrith says, "An right honest gift with safety of the bearer in mind. My thanks to you."

Frorin smiles at Dunrith.

Dunrith put a black mithril shield engraved with a silver swan in his gift box.

Dunrith put a silver gift box in his burgandy cloak.

Frorin says, "Many welcomes my leige."

Kytaara says, "M'lord Baron. My gift is not so valuable --save as a token that the Amazon Hut if the Snowcat is ever at yer beck and call."

Kytaara curtsies to Dunrith.

Kytaara offers Dunrith a snowcat crest.

Dunrith accepts Kytaara's snowcat crest.

Dunrith bows to Kytaara.

Kytaara curtsies.

Kytaara says, "You honour me, Lord Baron"

Kytaara blushes a delicate shade of pink.

Dunrith says, "Tokens of friendship and commitment are often the most valuable."

Dunrith smiles.

Dunrith put a snowcat crest in his burgundy cloak.

Dunrith sits down.

Dunrith asks, "Sir Brinn, have you informed your group of the purpose of this meeting?"

Brinn asks, "No, Milord. I asked them to await the eve, and they would know them. If I may, Milord?"

Dunrith nods to Brinn.

Brinn says, "Baron Malwind, thank you for the grace of your audience. We are greatly honored that you take the time to meet and discuss with us. As you know, we, the Order of the Silver Gryphon, have been working for some time now in the wilds to the north of here to secure our town, and coincidentally, your northern border. We are honored that you recognize our duty in these tasks, and are proud to serve our town as well. Our duties have been such that some of our number have been recognized by you and those members bestowed with knighthood for their valor, actions, and spirit, as much as their demeanor. Tales of their deeds did reach you, and you saw fit to recognize them, as appropriate, with title."

Brinn says, "I have asked that we be allowed an audience today that I might, in your service, point out that there are those among us who serve valorously, dutifully, and regularly, but have not yet been recognized formally in your court."

Dunrith nods to Brinn.

Brinn says, "I am aware that some actions, no mater how valorous, may never make way to your court. News of such actions as seen in our town or the surrounding wilds may never make it this far south. I am also aware that duty, while constant and steadfast, seldom gains the attention it deserves, for the commitment and duty required to be steadfast without recognition or expectation thereof is much more difficult to maintain than bravery in combat or quick thinking in the field." So, today, in your service, I would like to bring accounts aright, and recognize those who have held together the Order of the Silver Gryphon which has, whilst fulfilling a most noble and separate charter, has served you well to the north, for reasons not to be discussed today."

Brinn says, "Some time ago, our Order created an organization that promoted the well being of the warriors within, making them more able to focus on their tasks at hand without falling into the day to day traps and minutia that could easily drag down a group that tends toward action and not debate, toward quick resolution and not long, diplomatic process."

Brinn says, "The Order Membership itself elected officials to office, picking the candidates who might serve best in the capacity. The result was a leadership and a Council that guides the leader, making a system of checks and balances that, while allowing decisions to be made without endless debate, ensured that no tyrant or madman could turn the Order upon itself. It is this group of people who have kept the Order alive to be here before you today."

Brinn says, "The Council or the Order serves to keep the Leader mindful of his place, cognizant of the will of the full membership, and aware of his place within, not above, the Order. Additionally, and not coincidentally, they provide the leader with support, advice, council, and diverse opinions on all matters. I am honored to have been elected to the position of leader within the Order. However, I am here today to address the Council and their contributions to the Order, which can no longer go without recognition. The Council Members who have served faithfully for the last year are Dame and Lady Wanton Destruction, Lady Deavon Laeren, and Lord Ruffelin Highstem.

Brinn says, "I would first ask that you be made aware and hopefully recognize their service to the Order of the Silver Gryphon, and consequently to you. I would additionally like to formally petition to you for Knighthood to be bestowed upon the two members not yet thusly recognized, Lady Deavon Laeren and Lord Ruffelin Highstem."

Brinn says, "I have been very impressed with their demeanor and candor, and find that I could not have served effectively in my role as leader without their support and guidance. I daresay that, without the Council members, the Order may not exist in its current form today.

Brinn says, "I place myself, Sir Brinn Mithrandir, as always, at your service."

Brinn bows to Dunrith.

Dunrith nods to Brinn.

Dunrith says, "Well and admirably spoken."

Brinn says, "Thank you, Milord."

Dunrith says, "Of course, you do know that I would consider myself remiss if I did not make some attempt to assess the appropriateness of such a title before bestowing it."

Brinn says, "Of course, Milord. I simply give you, as your knight, my opinion and my estimation of them."

Dunrith says, "Let me see if I can't strike upon an instance to pose that might grant me some insight..."

Dunrith says, "Lady Deavon, since you were named first of the two who currently lack spurs, step forward, please."

Deavon steps forward nervously.

Deavon smiles at Dunrith.

Deavon says, "M'Lord."

Deavon curtsies.

Dunrith says, "At a time some years ago, a dame in my service, who followed Leya, did undertake a journey on my behalf."

Dunrith says, "During the course of that journey she did present my political position via documents to the Imperial Court."

Dunrith says, "At that time she neglected to identify herself properly, and was the cause of some embarassment, both to herself and to this barony."

Deavon frowns.

Dunrith says, "Upon her return trip she engaged in a combat of personal nature, one of honor, but one during which she slew her opponent."

Dunrith says, "She stated that she was overcome by some uncontrolled zeal and slew him even in repetition of an act performed by her diety."

Deavon hangs her head.

Dunrith asks, "Would you please inform me, which act caused me more concern and why?"

Deavon just touched a sparkling white Leya medallion inset with a tear-shaped pearl.

Deavon says, "M'Lord... an embarassment of a diplomatic or dignatory event can most often be... recovered..."

Deavon says, "However, the issue of losing oneself so total that one forgets their station..."

Deavon frowns.

Deavon says, "I would think that would be the most disappointing, of the most concern to ye. For one can be taught how to be a better representative. One can seldom be taught how to control their bloodlust."

Dunrith asks, "So you believe that her personal conduct during the return trip was of more concern to me than how she represented this barony before the Empress, herself?"

Deavon fidgets.

Deavon says, "Aye m'Lord, for wearing your sigil or your colors, she still cast dispersions upon the name of ye and your Barony."

Deavon nods.

Dunrith nods to Deavon.

Dunrith says, "Quite right you are."

Deavon smiles weakly.

Brinn smiles at Deavon.

Deavon says, "I apologize, m'Lord for my wayward Sister."

Deavon curtsies.

Dunrith says, "A misstatement or misstep can be excused. A lack of control and a loss of life is a permanent loss and she was representing this barony during the entire trip, not simply while in court."

Deavon just touched a sparkling white Leya medallion inset with a tear-shaped pearl.

Dunrith says, "Ruffelin, please step forward."

Ruffelin tenses up, beads of sweat glistening on his brow.

Ruffelin gulps.

Welan smiles at Deavon.

Ruffelin steps forward.

Deavon steps back to the formation, still trembling.

Ruffelin bows to Dunrith.

Dunrith says, "My question to you is along a different line. One posed more with a focus on strategy than honor."

Ruffelin says, "Aye, sir."

Dunrith says, "Suppose you are the ruler of a barony, beset upon from the east by a foe much larger than you and better equipped, yet your port, that aspect of your barony which provides most of its wealth and its lifesblood is tightly blockaded."

Dunrith says, "You have spent time and effort constructing an overland route to receive supplies from an ally to the north, yet over time it becomes clear that that solution will not suffice."

Brinn smiles.

Dunrith says, "You possess limited shipbuilding facilities beneath your city, but with them you cannot hope to build enough ships to outnumber those blockading you."

Dunrith says, "Now, mind you my admiral was a person raised directly from knighthood. He saw the solution to the question I am about to pose."

Ruffelin fidgets.

Ruffelin nods.

Dunrith asks, "How do you, with limited facilities, construct a force that can defeat the blockading corsairs hired by your opponent?"

Ruffelin says, "Yer Lordship, I'm nae 'un fer gie'in orders, bein' better at followin' 'em ..."

Ruffelin says, "Twould seem ta me th' key would be ta gain possession o' those other ships..."

Ruffelin says, "But wi' limited facilities, ye stan' li'l chance."

Dunrith smiles.

Dunrith says, "This may be a less than fair question, since if you are not of a nautical mind the answer may be more than difficult to arrive at."

Ruffelin says, "Frae a land standpoint, I'd say ta construct catapults which could set fire ta yer blockaders, then use yer ships. But, aye, I'm nae sailor, yer excellency."

Dunrith nods to Ruffelin.

Dunrith says, "In truth, the corsairs remain far enough out in the bay that our catapults cannot reach them."

Dunrith says, "However, your first comment was on the right track."

Ruffelin says, "In tha' case, sir, I'd try ta arrange ta either buy th' corsairs or ta take 'em."

Dunrith nods to Ruffelin.

Ruffelin says, "Pref'rably take 'em, as ye cannae well trust a bought ally."

Ruffelin fidgets.

Dunrith says, "Perhaps a different type of question would be more appropriate a measure than the one I've posed..."

Ruffelin says, "M'apologies fer havin' ta pose a second 'un, sir."

Dunrith asks, "As a knight in service to a group of people rather than to a specific lord or liege, how might your means of conduct differ since you are bound by no oath to those you choose to serve?"

Ruffelin says, "Well, sire, wi'out a oath ta bind a person, it leaves th' individual free ta interpret things 'is ain way..."

Ruffelin says, "When a oath spells out yer commitments, an' ye vow ta uphold it, ye bind yerselves tagether in ideals an' goals."

Ruffelin says, "A lack o' oath leaves it up ta folk ta voluntarily follow a course o' action or goals."

Ruffelin says, "In our case, we've 'ad our problems when individual goals dinnae match wha' th' Membership expected."

Ruffelin says, "Such wouldnae 'appen wi' a vow ta a liege as ye'd ken yer duty ta 'im."

Dunrith asks, "So you believe that the situation the members of your order are in is more difficult than that which knights in my service find themselves in?"

Ruffelin says, "In some ways, aye, but o'erall, nay, sir. We choose our goals an' ideals as a group. As such, we us'lly hae fewer conflicts with personal ideals."

Ruffelin says, "Yer knights hae it easier in tha' they vow loyalty ta ye an' hae nae real choice."

Ruffelin says, "Ours is a choice, sir."

Dunrith says, "I would question whether that perceived choice is a real one or simply an avenue for a lack of commitment. With no liege to watch for adherence to expected conduct, an unobjective knight may consider he has options that he does not in fact have."

Ruffelin says, "Aye, sir, 'tis where yer knights hae it easier. Wi' us, we mus' choose, an' our choices dinnae always be right."

Ruffelin says, "But, we hae it easier in tha' we choose our goals amongst us."

Ruffelin says, "Iffin th' majority hae ideals which conflict wi'those goals, we gae ta our Leadership."

Dunrith asks, "How do you believe that difference might cause your conduct to differ from that of my knights?"

Ruffelin says, "Yer knights would, theoretically, follow yer orders wi'out thought."

Ruffelin says, "Nae bein' bound ta ye, I'd be bound ta those I perceive bein' th' Order's goals an' ideals."

Ruffelin says, "An' wi' some, their ain ideals might come first, wi'out a oath ta bind 'em ta those goals."

Dunrith nods to Ruffelin.

Dunrith says, "I agree with your perception of the differences. However, as conduct of one wearing the spurs of knighthood should be based upon a fairly well known and accepted ideal, despite the added dangers involved with the lack of a single liege to answer to, the conduct of your knights and mine should be very close to the same."

Ruffelin nods to Dunrith.

Dunrith smiles.

Dunrith stands up.

Dunrith says, "Sir Brinn, I thank you for bringing two very apt candidates to my attention. As in the past, I will make my decision on the matter of knighthood known. However, in this case, a return trip within a week or two should suffice."

Brinn bows to Dunrith.

Brinn says, "We shall plan for a return trip at your summons, Milord."

Dunrith says, "A return trip a week hence should do nicely. If you discover that conflicts exist, please let me know."

Brinn says, "Thank you again, Baron Malwind, for granting us an audience."

Melitor says, "if you all would come with me, I shall escort you back"

Melitor says, "your leave, my liege"

Melitor bows to Dunrith.

Dunrith nods to the baronial advisor.

Melitor just went through a small side door.
